Six Variations on an Allegretto K.54
Unlike Mozart's other large-scale keyboard variations, the Six Variations on an Allegretto (Vienna 1788) seem full of childlike innocence and an economy of means. Several neo-baroque features are heard including gentle chromaticism, a thin texture and compact phrases. In the fourth variation Mozart uses a 4-part texture derived from string writing. In the final variation he unleashes rapid rhythmic activity supported by single notes in the bass. The whole work, although miniature, contains a wealth of ingenuity.
