Sonata in E-flat H.XVI:52 (complete)
Notes:
In Sonata in E-flat (1794) we can hear many of Haydn's orchestral effects translated onto the foretpiano. With sonorous chords and waves of scales, the composer revels in the piano as a fully developed solo instrument. In the first movement Haydn writes very long notes and flurries of rapid notes in quick succession, infusing the traditional form with a sense of freshness. The Adagio middle movement opens simply, growing in eloquence to the heartfelt reiteration of the principal theme. Haydn teases in the final Presto, taunting us with waggish repeated notes and satirical pauses. The composer has expanded on the architecture of his earlier piano pieces to create an original vehicle of pianistic display which enhances the musical material.
