Prelude and Capriccio
| Composer:
Weiss, Sylvius Leopold |
Notes:
This is a pairing of two unconnected pieces from Weiss' early career. With its daring succession of chromatic chords, the Prelude introduces an upbeat fugue that concludes with a Fantasia-style improvisatory cadenza. An earlier version of this piece, with a very different ending, is found among the lute tablatures anthologized in the Weiss Lutebook (music from the Warsaw MSS) on this site, entitled simply Allegro. The existence of the two versions allows us a glimpse into the mind of the composer, constantly seeking improvement in the form and execution of his pieces.
