Pieces in D (complete)
Notes:
As with the eminent French lutenists Gaultier and Mouton, David Kellner apparently waited until the very end of his career (he was also an organist) to publish his polished lute music. Kellner's music straddles the French-influenced brisé style of Esias Reusner and the Italianate violinistic lute idiom of S. L. Weiss. In place of an Allemande, Kellner provides a bell-piece, the Campanella. The Sarabanda and Aria are in a fine chorale style, with simple harmonies and rhythms. In contrast, the Gigue and Gavotte are full of surprise turns of phrase and affective chromaticism.
