Notes:
The two rondos penned by Giuliani around 1820 are his only works in the guitar and piano medium, apart from "potpourri" style music written with the pianist Moscheles. This is surprising, especially considering the popularity of this combination in Biedermeier Vienna, the city in which both Carulli and Giuliani made their careers. The piece features sure idiomatic writing for both instruments. As well as the soloistic cadenzas, Giuliani employs the close texture of a true duo, a dialogue in which neither instrument really dominates. The restrained use of the guitar in the low register during the rondo passages is a fine expressive detail. |
