Notes:
Fantasia por desembolber las manos (fantasy which loosens the hands) is an exceptional piece by Mudarra in many ways. Firstly it begins by taking in the lowest and highest notes of the instrument, stating its short theme, and then introducing carefully-wrought divisions in vocal style. The use of higher positions and technically difficult chords is also noteworthy. Finally the piece concludes with a short imitative passage. The whole piece takes in a tremendous variety of ground in only a few measures, in the style of the earliest 'toccatas'. |
