Notes:
This is an instance in which period instruments prove their suitability to both the texture and intentions of the music. It is difficult to play the piece to good effect on modern equivalents, so pronounced is the dynamic imbalance. As a result the vast majority of music in this genre has been ignored or forgotten. The light-hearted and charming melodies of the music, especially in the second and last movements, are traded back and forth in a playful manner. The relatively light structure of the Panormo guitar and Broadwood piano offer continually changing colour in the terraced dynamics marked by the composer. |
